Anthropogenic Influences on an Urban River: Differences in Cations and Nutrients along an Urban/Suburban Transect

چکیده

The Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. has been experiencing the challenges typical of urban rivers over last 70+ years. Here, we examine six years (2014 to 2020) base-flow geochemistry three tidal sites and suburban sites. Parameters examined include pH, hardness, SAR, alkalinity, TDS, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Zn, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Mo, Ni, Pb, total P, S, Sr, Ti, NO3−, NH4+. Not surprisingly, winter spring months showed very high Na (means 786 mg/L 1000 mg/L, respectively). Plotting Na/(Na + Ca) versus TDS shows contributions from groundwater, but also differences major world rivers. Main stem locations usually had Ca/Sr ratios > 200, suggesting that concrete was source Ca; however, Ca as well were frequently <200, indicating a different for Ca. Most low median Si:NO3 (between 3 5), elevated NO3− non-natural sources. data are consistent with freshwater salinization syndrome (a specific type stream syndrome), show developed landscape environments influences differently than environments.

Submarine groundwater discharge of nutrients and copper to an urban subestuary of Chesapeake Bay (Elizabeth River)

We investigated the role submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) plays in the delivery of nutrients and copper to the Elizabeth River (Virginia) estuary, a major subestuary of lower Chesapeake Bay. Using an approach based on radium isotopes, we concluded that two distinct sources of groundwater were equally impacting the estuary: a surface (marsh) aquifer and deep aquifer source each with a uniqu...

Lipophilic antioxidants and lipid peroxidation in yellow perch subjected to various anthropogenic influences along the St. Lawrence River (QC, Canada).

In Lake Saint-Pierre (LSP), the last great widening of the St. Lawrence River (province of Québec, Canada), the yellow perch has been experiencing a significant decline since the mid-1990s. The combined effect of several stressors (deterioration of habitats appropriate for reproduction and growth, invasive species and poor water quality) seems to exert considerable influence on the yellow perch...
